When Should My Child Start Seeing the Dentist?

It’s earlier than you may think! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that kids start seeing a dentist regularly whenever their first tooth comes out, or after they turn 1 year old. Then, they should see the dentist again every six months for comprehensive care.

Seeing a dentist regularly from such a young age has a number of benefits. First, your little one will become familiar with the routine of visiting the dentist, which makes them less likely to be anxious or uncomfortable about their dental visits.

In addition, consistently seeing a dentist such as Dr. Chris Mun from a very young age allows your child to get more customized dental care. Dr. Mun and the team at Pflugerville Family Dentistry can develop a relationship with you and your child, and understand the unique dental challenges that your child may face as they age and grow.

Even if you have an older child who hasn’t been to the dentist yet, now is the best time to start them on a healthy dental routine. We love treating littles ones of all ages, so come in today to meet Dr. Chris Mun and learn more about our pediatric dental services.

How Can I Prevent My Child From Getting Cavities?

The most important thing you can do is brush their teeth consistently. Kids of all ages need their teeth to be brushed for at least 2 minutes twice per day, ideally in the once in the morning and again at night before bed. You will have to brush your child’s teeth for them until they turn 6 or are coordinated enough to tie their shoes on their own.

Flossing is also a necessary aspect of any good oral hygiene routine. We recommend that you floss your child’s teeth once per day. You’ll usually have to floss for them until they’re about 10 years old.

In addition, it is important to see a dentist for regular pediatric teeth cleanings and oral exams every six months. With regular dental appointments, you’ll better understand your child’s risk of cavities, and be able to take appropriate steps to prevent them. For example, we can add fluoride treatments and dental sealant applications to any routine visit.

Diet is also an important factor in your child’s oral health. When possible, avoid snacks and foods that are very high in sugar, such as sticky or hard candy, potato chips, fruit juice, and soda. A diet high in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and dairy and low in simple sugars and starch can help keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Keeping Your Child Comfortable at Our Office

At Pflugerville Family Dentistry, we offer a fun, child-friendly environment with toys and entertainment for kids, as well as TVs in every operating room, blankets, and other comforting amenities to help your kids feel great about coming to the dentist.

We also offer sedation with laughing gas, which can help if your child is very nervous about a treatment. Laughing gas sedation is very gentle, and your child will be fully conscious and alert during their procedure, but will feel more comfortable and less anxious.
